At the end of August, ENACT had the pleasure to participate in the 5th Global Meeting on AI for Law Enforcement organised in Brazil by Interpol, United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), Brazilian Federal Police and the Fundação Justiça pela Ciência. The event was packed with three full days of panels, discussions, presentations and demos on developments in AI in policing from across the world. The event touched on all aspects of AI in law enforcement, from practical applications, processes for building technical capabilities, policy and governance and emerging threats from the criminal use of AI.
ENACT, represented by Cyril Piotrowicz of the Gendarmerie Nationale, was able to present results from a forthcoming ENACT report on the AI Act in a panel focused on overall AI regulation and legal readiness from global to local contexts.
The event highlighted the need to build and maintain public trust in law enforcement in the era of AI, as well as the various contexts and applications of AI, ranging from intelligence and forensics to enhancing efficiencies and administration. The threats from AI were also discussed, including the ways AI can accelerate crime, especially cybercrime, but also how improper technical implementation can have a significant impact.
